Really real?

I love to do arts and crafts.  I draw and do photography, but also collage, tole painting, calligraphy, and even on occasion make lamps or quilts.  In the last three years or so, however, more and more of my work has been digitally created.  I'll go into the reasons why in a minute, but first I want to talk about something I noticed recently: when people compliment my work and ask how I did it, they almost invariably seem disappointed when I saw that it's drawn or painted digitally. It reminds me of the look you get on someone's face when they praise the cake you brought to the party, and you tell them it's from a box mix — or Costco.  Someh

Back in late September, I saw this wonderful photo [http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/stray-cat-a-love-story/] on Jerry Coyne's site Why Evolution is True. One of Dr. Coyne's readers, Rik, had met with this stray cat and taken a very striking image, perched on a fence post. (He adopted the cat.) I loved the image and I asked Rik's permission to use it; he graciously agreed. I don't have a whole lot of time for art right now, just on weekends and maybe evenings when my energy level allows it.  This weekend I didn't get as far as I would have liked on Banshee "Kitty" Welton's portrait, but I did get the areas of colour for his fur blocked, and some of the surrounding clutter.   Although I did remove some of the background clutter when I sketched, the point of his particular image and its Kitty-ness is his acting as, well, a cat and making a nest right on his humans' possessions, in this case Masayo's sewing and craft project.  So I can't de-clutter too much, his very act of taking ov
